Korsman Bird Sanctuary
The Korsman Bird Sanctuary is situated a mere 5 minute walk from the Outlook Lodge and is not only good place for avid birdwatchers to visit, but even for those wanting to go for a walk this is a very good option.
The sanctuary is situated within a road called 'The Drive', and although the bird hides are no-longer accessible good views of the birds can be had with either a pair of binoculars or a spotting scope.
Birds that are regularly seen include: Black Heron, Greater and Lesser Flamingo's, Great Crested Grebe, Yellow-billed Duck, Fulvous Duck, White-faced Duck as well as Reed & White-breasted Cormorant. The reedbeds are home to Common Moorhen, Black Crake, African Rail, African Purple Swamphen and Little Bittern if you are lucky. A walk to the sanctuary in the late afternoon may reveal Black-crowned Night Heron.
During the summer months several wader species are present, depending on the water level. Wood Sandpiper, Common Sandpiper, Three-banded Plover, Pied Avocet and Black-winged Stilt may all be seen.
Even the garden surrounding the sanctuary may produce birds such as Green Woodhoopoe, Crested and Black-collared Barbet, Red-throated Wryneck and Cardinal Woodpecker to mention a few.
A walk to the sanctuary is definitely worthwhile and is highly recommended.
